This page contains frequently asked questions that a user might want to ask about LMDE. These questions are divided into categories and provide short, clear answers.

1 - The System

1.1 What kind of system is LMDE?
LMDE is a GNU / Linux operating system based on Debian "Testing". It's a system suitable for all users, for any use, from simple desktop PC to PC with sophisticated surveillance systems. It's open source, and it's free.
1.2 LMDE is cross-compatible with tLinux Mint based on Ubuntu?
No, it is not. LMDE is compatible with Debian, which is not compatible with Ubuntu.
1.3 LMDE is full compatible with Debian?
Yes, 100%. LMDE is compatible with Debian Testing repositories or Debian Squeeze repositories.
1.4 What is a rolling distribution?
LMDE constantly receiving updates. The ISO images are constantly changing, but the user does not need to reinstall the system.
1.5 How turn off the pc?

Main Menu → Exit

1.6 Where is Computer resources?
Go into main menu. It is the first section in the upper left.
1.7 Where is programs list?

Main Menu → Applications → All applications

1.8 Where is Documents folder?

Main Menu → Places → Home → Documents

1.9 How to find files and folders?
Put the file name in main menu search bar, or follow this path:

MainMenu → Places → Home → Ctrl+F and put in the file name

1.10 How to install new programs?

1.11 Where finding infos and tutorials?
Go into the official Linux Mint forums
1.12 How to defrag the hard disk?
You do not need to defragment the disk. It's an automatic operation performed by the system during boot time.

2 - Multimedia

2.1 There is a Media Player substitute?
With Totem already installed on your system.

Main Menu → Applications → Sound & Video → Movie player

Or with the excellent VLC already in your system.
2.2 Which program i can use to listen to Audio CDs?
You can use Rhythmbox, already in the system:

Main Menu → Applications → Sound & Video → Rhythmbox

2.3 How to rip music tracks from CDs?
You can use Rhythmbox, already in the system:

Main Menu → Applications → Sound & Video → Rhythmbox

or you can install Sound Juicer. In the Terminal, paste this command:

sudo apt-get install sound-juicer

2.4 How to rip a DVD?
Installing DVDRip. In the Terminal paste this command:

sudo apt-get install dvdrip

2.5 How to record sounds?
With the tool provided by the system that you find in:

Main Menu → Applications → Sound & Video → Sound Recorder

3 - Playing games

3.1 How can I install games?
Paste following command in the Terminal:

sudo apt-get install gnome-games

You can find it in:

Main Menu → Applications → Games

4 - Graphics

4.1 What using instead Adobe® Photoshop?
You can use the powerful GIMP already installed:

Main Menu → Applications → Graphics → GIMP

It can edit photos, drawings and make high-level graphics processing.
4.2 What I use for vector graphics?
You can install Inkscape. In the Terminal paste following command:

sudo apt-get install inkscape

You can find it in:

Main Menu → Applications → Graphics → Inkscape

4.3 How managing images on my computer?
You can view pictures on your computer with Eye of Gnome

Main Menu → Applications → Graphics → Image Viewer

4.4 What i can use instead Publisher?
You can install Scribus. From Terminal, run following command:

sudo apt-get install scribus

You can find it in:

Main Menu → Applications → Office → Scribus

4.5 How to scan images?
Once connected your scanner to PC, start Simple Scan

Main Menu → Applications → Graphics → Simple Scan

If the scanner is correctly recognized, you can run a scan with previews and all the other functions.
4.6 What can i use for CAD drawing?
You can install QCAD. From Terminal run following command:

sudo apt-get install qcad

You find it in:

Main Menu → Applications → Graphics → QCAD

5 - Office

5.1 What can i use instead MS Office?
LibreOffice that is already on your system and divided into specific applications.
5.2 What can i use instead Excel?
LibreOffice Calc, which is in:

Main Menu → Applications → Office → LibreOffice Calc

5.3 What can i use instead MS Word?
LibreOffice Writer that you can find in

Main Menu → Applications → Office → LibreOffice Writer

5.4 What can i use instead Notepad?
Gedit, already installed on system, that you can find in:

Main Menu → Applications → Accessories → Gedit

5.5 What can i use as a planner?
Evolution that you can find in:

Main Menu → Applications → Office → Evolution

5.6 What can i use for presentations?
LibreOffice Impress that is in:

Main Menu → Applications → Office → LibreOffice Impress
